"It's an offbeat and often violent story, but you can make the case for Brad Pitt as Zen Master Tyler Durden espousing the destruction of the illusion of self, and Edward Norton as his Mahakashyapa. ... "The things you own end up owning you. It's not about consumers per se. One of the things that spoke to me in the book was that at a certain point in your life you find you're not doing the things you want to do, you're kind of living out this program you were given by your parents, by your upbringing and the commercials that you saw, people that were in your life that were examples for you, and you find yourself chasing these ideals, and in the book the narrator says 'I've got all this stuff, I'm doing all the things I'm supposed to be doing, and my life feels totally empty because all I'm doing is collecting these items that are supposed to represent what I'm supposed to be. But I'm not really substantive, I have this collection of furniture and clothing and records and magazines and I have yet to define myself.' I don't think it's against consumerism as much as it is against buying wholesale somebody else's lifestyle." -- Director, David Fincher. See also the IMDB link

Based on the Novel by Irvine Welsh. Directed by Danny Boyle.
“Irvine Welsh's controversial first novel, set on the heroin-addicted fringe of working-class youth in Edinburgh, is yet another exploration of the dark side of Scottishness. The main character, Mark Renton, is at the center of a clique of nihilistic slacker junkies with no hopes and no possibilities, and only "mind-numbing and spirit-crushing" alternatives in the straight world they despise. This particular slice of humanity has nothing left but the blackest of humor and a sharpness of wit.” Amazon.com. See also The Sprocket Trainspotting Interview and the IMDB
